Who are the real prisoners?

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

One was successful and famous and miserable. One was a failure, incarcerated and joyful. These are real people. Their life story makes one wonder, who is truly free…

Bill Bright attended an elaborate dinner party in California along with many of the who’s who of Hollywood. The world-famous actor he sat next to had all the luxuries and attention many dream of and yet he was filled with anger toward everyone and everything. He rebuked Bill for trying to minister to college students, "Why waste your time on students?” he challenged. “They are just a bunch of hot-headed radicals!"

But then something inside him broke and he said, "Why doesn't somebody work with older people?" He suddenly began to weep. "Why doesn't somebody help me? I need help!"

Across the table from them was the famous daughter of one of Hollywood's founders. She was wealthy, and lived in a palatial mansion, but she told Bill she had nothing to live for and was seriously thinking about suicide.

Two days later, in one of the most infamous high-security penitentiaries in America Bill met many inmates who shared their story with him. While behind bars they had heard about the saving grace of Jesus and had found forgiveness in accepting His payment for their sins. Their faces were alight with joy. Though behind bars, the prisoners had been set free by the truth of Jesus Christ.

We are all in need of being set free. Money, fame and power are not inherently bad, but they can often serve to enslave rather than give the true freedom we hope for. The truth is, only when Christ sets us free are we truly free. The prisoners knew it, and thankfully, the actor and the heiress discovered it. How about you?

Your View of God Really Matters …

Are you free? Or are you still a slave to your self-centeredness? Your temper? How about addictions to drugs, alcohol, food or pornography? Only Christ can set you free, but you must stop focusing on yourself and focus solely on Him. Today, follow Jesus.

Read God’s Word Today…

2 Corinthians 2:17 NLT "For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

GOD, because You are Truth, I will live in the freedom of Your truth.
