“When You open Your hand, You satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing.” Psalm 145:16
What do you long for? As you go through your day, what do you think about most, strive for hardest and seek after with all your heart? If recent polls are correct, a relationship with God is far down the list for many Americans and it’s reflected in every area of the culture. The disease that’s infected us is subtle and destructive.
Moralistic Therapeutic Deism. Many of those sitting in church every Sunday are suffering from it. Are you? Here’s how you know:
If you believe in thought or action that God’s primary purpose for existing is to make you happy you are infected.
Here’s some examples of what it looks like in every day life:
Having sex outside of marriage and then worshipping our holy God on Sunday morning…after all, God wants me to be happy, right?
Telling “white lies,” cheating on tests, stealing from the office, betraying my closest friend, gossiping, abusing alcohol, drugs and people, and then raising unrepentant hands to Jesus and expecting Him to give happiness.
Filing for divorce simply because I’m not “happy,” believing God rubber stamps my choice and that He will bless future relationships…until they don’t make me “happy” anymore.
Our relationship with God has become about what we want from God rather than what He wants for us.
No wonder the joy and peace He promised eludes so many.
The Creator God knows what will give us lasting joy and peace. He didn’t give us the Ten Commandments to take the fun and happiness out of life. They are a roadmap to joy that is more than we can imagine. The first Commandment flies in the face of Moralistic Therapeutic Deism: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind.”
Hunger after God, not your own happiness. Ask God to open your eyes to any tendrils of Moralistic Therapeutic Deism that may have penetrated your view of Him and turn away from anything that prevents you from having an intimate relationship with Him.
Your View of God Really Matters…
Take a pen and piece of paper. List anything in your life that might prevent you from hungering after God with all your heart. Then confess it to the Lord according to 1 John 1:9. Receive your forgiveness and begin an exciting new quest! Focus on who God really is and the disease of Moralistic Therapeutic Deism will be choked out by the reality of God’s perfect love, mercy, faithfulness, justice, power, sovereignty and more!
Read God’s Word Today…
Matthew 22:37-38 NLT “Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord you God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.”
Psalm 63:1 NLT“O God! You are my God; I earnestly search for You. My soul thirsts for You; my whole body longs for You in this parched and weary land where there is no water.”
GOD, because You are personal I will seek to know You above all else.
