“In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Yes, the Lord is for me; He will help me. I will look in triumph at those who hate me.” Psalm 118:6-7

They warned him. “If you show up to speak, radicals are planning to stone you.”

Bill Bright had an impossible choice to make. Show up, share the gospel, get stoned or not show up, not get stoned and not share the gospel. What would you have done? It’s hard for most of us to know. My dad did what I saw him do countless times over the years; he prayed and asked God for guidance.

God told him to go… so he went.

As he stood to speak the agitators began to heckle him. Even knowing that many clutched rocks intended for him, he was filled with peace. Taking a deep breath my dad began to sing. His off-key voice filled air and pierced the hearts of stone with fear. Others in the crowd joined in singing the simple praise chorus. Suddenly, a percussion of rocks hitting the ground mixed with the melody. Now empty handed, the rock throwers fled the room. Dad told me later that the enemy cannot stand when God’s people praise Him.

I’ve never forgotten that powerful example. Every day you and I have a choice to make. The enemy of our souls is ready to throw every rock in his vast but limited arsenal. Bill Bright showed us what to do:

  1. Seek God’s guidance. Dad turned his focus to his Savior and asked Him for direction. Bill Bright didn’t knee jerk into a decision. There are times when God directs us to walk away. Other times the Holy Spirit leads us into the line of fire. We are not wise enough in our own understanding to know which is the best course of action.

  2. He kept his focus on God. Once the decision was made, he kept his eyes on the Creator not on the enemy. Too often we let our eyes wander from the Lord as we follow through on His direction. Praising God is a powerful way to train our focus on the Savior. It is also a powerful weapon against the enemy. There is a reason God’s Word encourages us to keep praise “continually on our lips”! (Psalm 34:1)

We are in unprecedented times. Will God’s people seek His guidance and then boldly follow through, fixing their eyes on Jesus – the Author and Perfecter of their faith?

I don’t know what His plan for you today might entail, but I do know He has a plan. You may be confined to your home, but the Holy Spirit is not. God didn’t say ‘Ooops! I didn’t see that pandemic coming!” He is in control. He has a plan for you and if you will seek Him and focus on Him you will see Him work in ways you never imagined.

Your view of God really matters…

What is God asking you to do today? It is really easy to focus on the world around us rather than the One who made the world. Don’t let the enemy of your peace and joy succeed in capturing your attention.

When you are afraid, sing praise to the One who has you in the palm of His hand. Worship the Holy One who is more powerful than any virus, government, economy or fear. He doesn’t promise that the stones will never fly. Stephen’s experience was very different from Bill Bright’s (Acts 7:54-60). But even so, Stephen kept his eyes on the Lord. God gave him strength and peace even as he was being stoned and Stephen saw Heaven just before he walked into it.

Psalm 28:7 “The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust Him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.”

GOD, because You are all-powerful and in total control I will listen to Your voice and do what You ask.

Bill Bright often said, “There is nothing too big for us to attempt for the glory of God. If our hearts and motives are pure, if what we do is according to the Word of God, He hears and is able to do more than we ask or even think!”

Do you agree? Sitting in your home, confined and isolated because of a pandemic, are you believing God for big things?

Allow me a moment of transparency—I believe God for big things, but lately I’m having a bit of a challenge moving it from my head to my heart. We were to be on the road speaking and training people how to make GOD the issue. We’ve been building up to this moment for years. America needs this message now more than ever. And yet here we sit. Speaking engagements postponed and the country shut down. It “feels” like the big things fizzled out. But did they? Maybe I’m missing the “big” things God is doing because I’m focused on the wrong big things.

I made a list of what God is doing in my life as a result of the pandemic. Most of them revolve around my heart and my trust in Him. Hmmm, not small things.

Then it hit me. I don’t want to just survive this pandemic isolation, I want to thrive in it.

Read Bill’s quote again. He said, “if our hearts and motives are pure.” What does purity of heart and motive mean? Bill said it is the heart that does not harbor unconfessed sin and is surrendered to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

We, as God’s people, have an incredible opportunity before us. Most of us suddenly find ourselves with time. What we do with that time may very well may set the course for our future. Will we use the time to draw close to God, hear His voice, confess our sin and surrender to the guiding power of the Holy Spirit? If we do, we could very well emerge from our homes in a month or so and experience the beginning of a new Great Awakening.

Could it be that simple? Yes. And what an incredibly big thing that would be!

Your view of God really matters…

God is either who He says He is or He is not--pandemic or no pandemic. He is either faithful or He is not. He is either Holy or He’s not. He’s either perfectly loving, always with you, in control or He’s not… there is no in between. Don’t waste this incredible opportunity to draw close to God and experience His work in you and through you.

Don’t just survive dear friends. Join me in praying that God will do something BIG. That He will enable us to thrive. I’m excited to see what happens when we emerge!

“Let your mind race. Let your prayers be without limit. Yet, whatever you believe, whatever you think, whatever you pray for—God’s power is infinitely beyond it all.” Bill Bright

Psalm 32:5 “Finally, I confessed all my sins to You and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.’ And You forgave me! All my guilt is gone.”

2 Peter 1:3 “By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him, the One who called us to Himself by means of His marvelous glory and excellence.”

Ephesians 1:16-19 NLT “I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope He has given to those He called—His holy people who are His rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe Him.”

GOD, because You are God and I am not, I will confess my sins and surrender my life completely to You.

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:3 NIV

A story is told of a shipwrecked sailor who clung to a rock in great danger until the tide went down. Later a friend asked him, “Didn’t you shake with fear when you were hanging on the rock?”

The sailor simply replied, “Yes, but the rock didn’t.”

Don’t you love that response? It’s so authentic. He didn’t deny his fear. It’s what he did in the midst of his fear that is so powerful. He clung to what was stronger than the storm and his fear. We all have that choice before us today.

Life and its uncertainties may shake us, but God—Who is the Rock of Ages—does not move. If we cling to Him, His strength sustains us.

Around the world a pandemic is shipwrecking nations, economies and lives. In a moment everything has changed… except God.

Since God never changes (James 1:17), God’s character is constant. Unlike us, He does not compromise or change His values. He cannot be manipulated or persuaded to go against His word. His promises are the same. His power, faithfulness and mercy are the same. His sovereignty never wavers and His love for us is steadfast. He is with us and He will help us get through the storm.

Hold on tight to the Rock that does not shake. He will get you through the storm.

Your View of God really matters...

What/Who are you holding on to in the midst of the pandemic storm? The enemy of your soul wants you to grab onto your retirement funds, your pay check, your health, your family. It’s not that those things are bad, but the destroyer of your joy and peace often uses the Good to rob you of the Best, the true Rock. Be wise dear friends. Hold on to the Rock, be His light in the darkness and we will see Him work in ways we never imagined.

Read God’s Word Today…

Psalm 62:5-8 “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. O my people, trust in Him at all times. Pour out your heart to Him for God is our refuge.”

GOD, because You never change I will hold on tight to You in the midst of the storm.
